Board, teachers agree to contract

6/18/09 (Thu)

At its regular meeting June 11, the Beulah Public School Board ratified a contract with the Beulah Education Association that will govern teacher salaries and benefits for the next two school years. The teachers will see significant gains in their wages with an increase base wage plus an across the board wage increase. The agreement marks a continuation of a recent trend of reasonably amicable negotiations between the school district and the teachers.

The increase in wages comes with a decrease in property taxes, as an increase in state aid will lower the school district’s mill levy from 185 to 110.

The contract increases the base salary in each of the contracts seven wage ranks. Each rank is determined by a teacher’s education and years of experience. Superintendent Rob Lech said this structure allows the district to maintain equity between teachers who have been at Beulah for years and new hires with equivalent experience. Those base salaries in each rank will increase by 6 percent in 2009-10 and another 4 percent in 2010-11. Board president Phil Eastgate emphasized that this was not a raise for every teacher but an adjustment in the salary schedule. Every teacher will receive a $350 across-the-board increase in 2009-10 and $920 raise in 2010-11.
