All in the name of teamwork

Posted 2/18/09 (Wed)

The Solen boys’ basketball team came to Center last Saturday and 32 minutes later the Sioux won the points off of turnovers battle, 3-pointer points category, points off the bench category and had a higher free throw percentage.

What they didn’t have were four Wildcats in double figures as Center-Stanton gutted out a 67-60 District 9 victory in the re-scheduled contest. The win should pit C-S in the third place seed as the boys district tournaments begins Feb. 26 in Mandan. The Wildcats only district losses came to No. 1 seed Standing Rock and second seed Shiloh Christian.

"Our season record is 9-7 but we could easily be 13-3 as we’ve had plenty of opportunities to win many close games," head coach Scott Jung said.

And Saturday’s game was the first step in righting previous wrongs, as Andrew Anderson put in an old-fashion layup and free throw to open the Wildcat scoring. Kirby Kraft swished the trey to follow up his teammate.

Kraft added a second 3-pointer to tie 9-9 midway through the first quarter but Solen’s Grant Fast Horse soon had a layup to get back the lead.

Jacob Henke had a steal and a layup as the score tied again at 11-11 but a Sioux run in the final two minutes left the Wildcats trailing 20-15 after the first quarter.

In the second quarter, four points from Henke and another pair from the free-throw line by Anderson had the score tied up again at 20-20.
