Nail-biting week for Wildcats

12/25/08 (Thu)

The Center-Stanton Wildcats missed 20 free-throw attempts in their District 9 contest against New Salem last Saturday. But they made the final three chances from the charity stripe to win 54-51 and remain undefeated in conference action.

The Wildcats trailed from the first point early in the game against the Holsteins. Every time C-S would get within a basket, it seemed New Salem would go on a run. The first quarter ended with the Wildcats down 14-10.

The Wildcats kept fighting for the lane and a bucket by Micheal Henke midway through the second quarter followed by three consecutive layups from Andrew Anderson put the Wildcats up by two at 20-18.

Shae Brown drove the lane and found the hoop and foul for a 3-point play for their biggest lead so far in the game. But New Salem quickly responded with only their second basket of the quarter. Both teams had even scoring the rest of the way for a 27-24 halftime score.

"I’ve seen all defense and rebounding improve tonight. On a night like tonight, it saved us," head coach Scott Jung said.
