The Center-Stanton Wildcats opened their season with a home loss to Shiloh Christian but showed tremendous upside. Last Friday the same trend continued, this time against Richardton-Taylor on the road.

Last Tuesday’s season opener was a lot like eating a turkey dog for the Center-Stanton Wildcats. They knew it was good for them but it lacked the delicious taste of victory. The Wildcats fell 48-18, 30 points better than their 60 point loss to the Shiloh Sky Hawks in 2012.

When Cale Ferderer first arrived back in Center he was an aide in the special education department and assistant football coach. Last year was Ferderer’s last season as an assistant. Now, he is the head coach but he hasn’t forgotten his past.

Washburn coaches Dirk Hausauer and Kip Erkickson had a patent pending entering last weeks section 7 American Legion tournament. The duo led three teams to consecutive section crowns and hoped for a fourth crown and consecutive state tournament appearance. Opening day - Washburn vs. Highway 21

The Washburn American Legion Post 12 baseball team stands at the top of the section and is the No.1 seed as of last Friday. They took down Hwy 21 in both games to get an edge on the No. 2 team Beulah.

Whenever Beulah and Washburn square off against each other in baseball it’s typically a big game with playoff seeding or championships on the line. On Sunday, June 30, the teams matched up in Beulah for a double header and sole possession of first place in the section.

Last fall the Wildcats had a tough season on the volleyball courts. The Wildcats lost in the district tournament to Turtle Lake-Mercer and Washburn. But there were highlights during the Wildcats season even though they suffered a lot of losses.

The Washburn Post 12 team has battled with rain for much of the spring and on Tuesday afternoon they were sitting through yet another rain delay while playing in Omaha, Neb.

Friday offered the only fair day for baseball at the Washburn baseball field as the Steve Kenner Memorial Baseball Tournament started. All games were on time Friday. Four innings were played on Saturday before teams were soaked and everyone went home to let the field dry out for another day. The field was too wet to play on Sunday, coach Kip Erickson said.
