Bison take second at Laker Invitational

Hazen started off the tournament in Burlington Friday evening in pool play versus Ray.

"We were somewhat disjointed this match," Hazen head coach Kim Wolf said. "Our back row communication and skill execution was just a bit off."

Strong serving – 10 aces – and a balanced offense led Hazen to the win. Jenna Maas led the team with nine kills, Allison Opp smashed seven, Samatha Ziegler six and Kara Dietz five kills.

Next up for the Bison were the traditionally strong Bottineau Stars. Leading the team in digs were Macall Wimer seven, Brianna Beecher five, Maas four and Opp four. Both games were back and forth affairs down to the wire. Stepping back to serve with Hazen in the lead 21-19 in Game 1, Ziegler fired off three straight points to give Hazen the win. With the score tied at 18 in Game 2, it was Beecher’s turn to provide the Bison with some breathing room, serving five straight points including four aces.

This was a fun match to watch, as it featured two of the premier setters in the state, Hazen’s Beecher and Bottineau’s Abby Aide.

"Both girls do a great job of leading their teams and running the offense," Wolf said. "Brianna (Beecher) set a fantastic match, as was evidence in the balanced offense, six players contributing between two and six kills each. She worked hard to deceive the defense and put her hitters in favorable situations."
