All rested and ready for some action

Posted 1/07/09 (Wed)

For most teams, the preseason ended in late November.

However, for the Hazen-Beulah girls’ hockey team, practices still have that feel to it. Though the Novas’ regular season started Nov. 25, they haven’t played a game in almost a month.

The Novas started the season 3-2, but with inclement weather the next three games were postponed and the holiday break came so H-B went 23 days without a competition.

"The main concern was how we were going to react after three weeks off," head coach Jeff Dietz said. "Practice had been going well but they were well overdue for a game and excited to play."

It only made sense that when the Novas finally got back into action, it would be a makeup game. H-B was scheduled to take on West Fargo Dec. 30 but blowing snow kept the Packers from making the long trip. Instead they came to town on a much calmer evening three days later.

And anyone watching that first period could tell both teams just had a break. Shaking the rust off and getting back into a groove took the Novas about 20 minutes from the clock.

H-B’s defense was solid as they held the tough east team scoreless until less than a minute and a half remaining in the second period. However, you can’t keep a team as powerful as WF down forever. At 14:31 Ally Klug sent a long shot flying that hit Novas goalie Paige Bruce in the chest. The puck bounced off her side awkwardly and Tia Lopez was there to poke it in to end the second period 1-0.
