For a select few Mercer County residents, Thursday nights mean horseshoes. The Spring Creek Horseshoe Club has been running more than a quarter of a century and club coordinator Linda Flemmer doesn’t foresee it slowing down anytime soon.

Warning: Hazen LumberKings baseball games are not for the faint of heart. Just ask coaches Arliss Maas and Scott Leintz. In the past two weeks the first-year coaches have been soaring with double digit leads and also struggling to reach the bases.

Going into the top of the seventh inning, Kerby Duewel had every pitcher’s dream: a possible no hitter. The Hazen American Legion pitcher had let a few walks past and even a couple scores. About to shutdown the Section 7 foe, only an out away, Duewel lost his ultimate goal.

They may not win Major League Baseball’s Triple Crown Award but that doesn’t stop Tanner Borlaug and Alex Barfield from having their own home run derby. Following mirror blasts Tuesday night, Borlaug leads the series 4-3.

In the state of North Dakota, one is hard pressed to find a more respected or successful high school golf coach than Darrell and Kathy Berglund. Their prestige is spreading past the state line as Darrell was recently named a finalist for the National High School Athletic Coaches Association golf coach of the year. Darrell is one of eight finalists with other golf coaches from Arizona, New Mexico, South Dakota, Connecticut, Illinois and Missouri. Each finalist will present a clinic during the convention and the winner will be announced June 23.
