The Washburn Cardinals defeated the Trojans, 58-39, in the championship game of the McLean County Invitational Tournament in Underwood this past week.
Max defeated Underwood 53-28 in the third place game; Wilton beat Mandaree 46-36 for fifth place; and Garrison defeated Hazen JV 44-35 for seventh place.
Quarter-final action saw Washburn over Hazen JV 53-26; Max defeated Wilton 45-38; Underwood slipped past Mandaree 29-28; and Turtle Lake-Mercer McClusky defeated Garrison 54-32.
Consolation action: Wilton defeated Hazen JV 44-35 and Mandaree beat Garrison 37-34.
Semi-final action: Washburn defeated Max 59-54 in overtime and TL-M-M beat Underwood 48-41.
Trojans 39-Cardinal 58
Jacy Hausauer was the Trojans in scoring in the championship game with 10 points. Samantha Schell was the Cardinals’ scoring leader with 21 points.
Kim Tkach got the Trojans on the board first as she scored from the left base line at the 7:09 mark.
The Cardinals then scored 14 unanswered points to take a 14-2 lead as the first quarter ended.
The second quarter Tkach scored on a base line drive followed by Taylor Fylling with a bucket to cut the Cardinals’ lead to 14-6.
After a bucket from Cardinals Kennedy Retterath, Jaime White Bear and Kelsey Everett got buckets to make the score 16-10 Cardinals.
A put-back from Samantha Shell was answered by Everett; Everett was answered by Shell again to make the half-time score, 20-12, Cardinals.
The Trojans fell behind by 12 points early in the third quarter but, with 5:06 left in the quarter, the Cardinals were whistled with a pair of technical fouls for delay of game. White Bear made three of the four fouls shots and, seconds later, Everett scored on a in-bounds play to make the score 30-23.
