In a year when it would have been easy to just throw in the track cleats, the Central McLean Cougars were able to keep their numbers up, keep the athletes running and throwing, with several of them advancing to the state track meet this past weekend in Bismarck.
Coach Lee Weisgarber credits his seniors for keeping the younger kids interested in the sport when they easily could have just given up.
“Senior leadership and keeping everybody focused – that was key for us,” said Weisgarber. “They could have easily just given up and said, after two months of practice in the gym and not getting on the track, they could have easily given up. But they kept right on going. The seniors made sure those younger kids kept working.”
And it paid off. Seniors Caitlyn Berg and Dylan Ruff advanced to state in track, and they were joined by several underclassmen, who, although they didn’t finish in the top eight, have some track successes to build on.
