Grapplers bring home five placers
The Velva Garrison Max Aggies competed at the N.D. State Wrestling Tournament last weekend, and returned with several place winners, including a state champ.
Senior grappler Troy Jespersen went 4-0 at the meet to capture first place in the final match of the tournament at 285.
“Troy wrestled hard and smart, kept things where he wanted them,” said VGM Head Coach Mike Thingstad. “I’m very happy for him, he has come up just short the last couple of years.”
Jespersen ended the season with 35 pins, just short of the state record at his weight class, which is 36.
The Velva senior went into the tournament as the number one seed, and pinned his way to the finals, taking out South Border’s Cody Nylander in 26 seconds and Rolla-Rock Lake-St. John’s Seth Anderson in another first period pin at 1:11. In the semifinals, Jespersen faced off Brooks McClintock, Rugby, and pinned him in 2:55.
In the title bout, the Aggie took on number two seed Jordan Stenson from Lisbon and won the championship 5-3.
Jespersen also won all three of his matches for the Aggies during the dual team state tournament, where VGM finished fifth.
