The Aggie netters started the new season with the Bottineau tournament last Saturday.
“We started the day pretty rough,” admitted Velva volleyball coach Jamie Sitz. “I was working with the line-up, trying to see who plays well where and by who. By tournament time we had it figured out and they pulled it off when it mattered. We took first in the Silver Tournament.”
The girls started the day against Glenburn, and lost 18-21 and 13-25. Allison Manley put away 3 kills and Jaci Norbury 4, while Sarah Weidler drilled 4 aces.
The Aggies then fell to Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood 15-25 and 20-25 before splitting with Newburg-Westhope, 22-19 and 21-24. Against MLS, Brittany Berndt nailed 6 kills, Norbury put down 5, and Weidler had 4. Rachel Pfennig hammered 6 aces.
Velva then moved into the silver tournament, where they beat TGU-Towner 25-20 and 25-14. Berndt and Manely had 5 kills each, Norbury nailed 4 and Weidler 3. From the service corner, Pfennig put away 6 aces, Berndt 4 and Norbury and Manley had 3 apiece.
The Aggies faced off with Rugby in the final match, and pulled out a win, losing the first game 21-25, then coming back to take the next two for first place.
Pfennig drilled 7 kills and 12 aces, Weidler put away 6 kills, Manley had 5 kills and 8 aces.
“I think our team is going to be very strong this season and they have proven to me we can pull it off when it matters,” Sitz said. “Our last game against Rugby proved that, we lost the first game and came back with a vengence in the next two. It was amazing to watch. I am very excited for our season to start!”
