Track team running it down

The Velva-Drake-Anamoose track team is having a stellar season as the boys and girls continue winning and racking up state qualifiers. Velva hosted the Northwest Conference on April 20, and marked the occasion in style as the girls took first and the boys took second.

Aggies on a roll

After suffering 6-1 and 5-4 defeats at the hands of Minot Ryan, the Velva-Drake nine went on to take out Surrey 4-3 and 15-5 and then Garrison 5-2. Garrison won the second non-counter game, 5-3.

Stellar pitching performances and heavy hitters lifted the Velva-Drake nine to a couple of big wins over Central McLean, 14-0 and 9-3.

Aggies fall to Ryan

The Velva-Drake nine fell hard to prennial state champs, the Minot Ryan Lions, in baseball play last Friday. Minot took the opener 5-1 and then zapped the Aggies 10-0 in the nightcap.

Athletes hit the track

The VDA track team was in Hazen last week, competing with nearly 30 schools. The girls finished the day in seventh place and the boys took tenth.

Aggies just miss region

The Aggies’ gut-wrenching battle with Rugby to earn a berth in the Region 6 tournament ended with the Aggies on the short end of a 42-45 score. “It was a good basketball game played by two good teams,” said Velva Coach Matt Weidler. “We had a few opportunities we let go. It just wasn’t our night.”

Cagers split games

The Aggies tangled handed Sawyer a 61-31 drubbing on Feb. 9 before losing a 45-52 battle to Our Redeemer’s later in the week.

Matmen take 12 to state

After taking the Region 3 Dual title the previous weekend, the Velva Aggies went to Burlington and took first in the individual tournament as well, and qualified 12 wrestlers for the state individual tournament. (The top four place winners advance.)

Girls earn regional berth

The Aggie girls came out of the District 11 tournament by qualifying for the Region 6 tournament in Minot this weekend. The girls wrapped up district play in a weather-delayed Monday night game where they beat Towner-Granville-Upham 56-31 to earn a regional berth.

Matmen pick up win

The Velva matmen downed Rolla-Rock Lake 48-21 in dual action last Thursday. The Aggies were at the Larimore tournament last weekend, and were edged out of first by Class A Grand Forks Central, 164.5 to 159.
