The Velva Post 39 Babe Ruth baseball team is headed for the state tournament after successfully defending their title at last weekend’s District 1 tournament in Velva.

Velva’s Post 39 hosted the Bismarck Reps last Thursday, fighting it out till the end against a good team. In the end, Velva lost 9-7 and 8-4.

In their fifth consecutive state high school baseball tournament appearance, the Aggies couldn’t muster a win and finished the tournament in the same spot as last season – eighth.

The Velva Drake Aggies track teams were in Bismarck competing at the state meet last week, and returned home with some impressive finishes. The Aggies took 26 qualifiers to the meet, the second most for any Class B school, according to Coach Dave Peterson.

After losing a tight 6-5 game to Surrey to determine the region’s number one seed, the Velva-Drake came back with a vengence, beating the Mustangs twice to reclaim Region 6 title. Trenton Bruner was named the Region 6 Player of the Year, and he and Weidler were nominated to the All State Team.

“It was an exciting day for both the girls and boys track teams,” said Velva-Drake track coach Dave Peterson of the Region 6 track meet. “The depth of the boys team showed up as they were able to score in every event.” Twenty-six Aggies will compete at the state meet, and last Saturday’s regional contest saw a number of those tracksters making the grade.

The Aggies boys and girls track teams have been burning it up, qualifying additional competitors for the state meet. At the CNDC outdoor meet on May 5, Kyle Kuntz, Josh Sandy, Steven Hauff and Michael Wiest turned in a time of 3:32.86 to qualify for state in the 1,600 relay.
