In a heartbreaker, the Velva girls fell 49-48 to Westhope-Newburg in regular season play last week.

Velva girls beat Minot Ryan

The Aggies hosted the Lady Lions of Minot Bishop Ryan in girls basketball play on Monday night, and beat the visitors 40-30.

Aggies cagers pick up two

The Velva boys have moved over the 500 mark by picking up two wins last week and going to 5-4. The Aggies hosted Rugby on January 14 and beat the Panthers 53-42, and then traveled to Surrey where they took down the Mustangs 72-57.

Aggies trounce Lions

The Aggie grapplers were in the Lions’ den last Thursday, but the home advantage didn’t help Minot Ryan as Velva ran over the hapless Lions 66-9. Ryan’s only points came off a forfeit at 152 and slim 6-5 win at 119.

The Aggies picked up their first win of the season in their opening game of the Velva Invitational, taking down Surrey in a 50-42 dogfight.

The Velva Aggies boys basketball team opened the new season in Des Lacs, where they fell to the Lakers 57-47.

Grapplers going great guns

The Aggie grapplers had a busy week, starting with a Friday night triangular in Velva where they hosted Beulah and Class A Williston. The Aggies thumped the Beulah 52-17 as the Miners gave up three pins and five forfeits.

Aggies are state champs...again!

“It felt the same way it always does … great.” So said Velva Head Football Coach Larry Sandy when asked about his team’s eighth state title in 10 years, making the Aggies 8-0 in their Class A Dakota Bowl appearances. The Aggies took down the Langdon-Munich Cardinals 20-0 in the title game last Friday afternoon, although the score doesn’t truly reflect the action.

Girls take third in region

While Velva volleyball coach Diana Thingstad called the Aggies semifinal loss to Our Redeemers “heartbreaking,” this determined crew didn’t let it keep them down. The girls came back to the court at the Region 6 tournament in Minot and took down the Bottineau Stars in three straight to claim third place. After repeated first round losses at the regional contest, it was an important accomplishment for the netters.

Aggies head for state championship game

The Velva Aggies are headed back to the state title game after a two year absence, and Coach Larry Sandy is feeling pretty good about that. “It’s awesome,” he said. “It feels like it’s where we belong. You work all year for it, and if you don’t go, it just doesn’t feel right.”
