Oliver County Gifts of Love ready

12/25/08 (Thu)

Christmas will be merrier for 38 families in Oliver County this year. Approximately 30 volunteers spent Dec. 19 at the Center Civic Center packing "Gifts of Love" baskets filled with a turkey, fruits, vegetables, bread, milk, macaroni, soup, paper products and toys.

LaVerne Hoffman, chairperson for the program, said the Center-Stanton Public School, the community’s churches and a donation from ChristKindlemarkdt contributed toward the program.

The organization started collecting food and donations the first part of November. Trees with kids’ names on them were at the Oliver County Courthouse and the Coal Country Community Health Center. People could choose a name and buy a toy for that child for "Gifts of Love."

Deb Starck, vice chairperson, explained how families could get a "Gift of Love" basket.

Families who received baskets last year, families referred by churches or just referred by community members filled out an eligibility slip and must agree to accept the basket.
