Sporting Chance group builds new shelter at Nelson Lake
Community members and others using the recreation and campground areas at Nelson Lake now have a shelter from the elements thanks to Sporting Chance. The adaptive recreation group combined its annual family camping fun get-together weekend with some serious hard work. All of the materials and labor were donated.
“We used to put tents up for the annual ski event,” member Barry Berger said. “Last year, we got the idea to put up a permanent shelter and the community can use it, too.”
Sporting Chance was founded by Steve Piper, a man who Berger calls “truly inspirational.” Piper, who has cerebral palsy due to a birth injury, has dealt with health issues throughout his lifetime.
