The Oliver County Planning and Zoning Board had some lengthy discussion Nov. 29 with landowner Henry Maertens and among themselves. The board voted to recommend that the County Commission deny a conditional use permit to Maertens for residences on his property at the intersection of Highway 25 and Highway 31, east of and adjacent to The Blind Pig. The recommendation was based on zoning violations and health issues. Members present were Chairman Dan Bueligan, Mary Wahlman, John Smith, John Wicklund, Daren Klingenstein and Deborah Starck.

Splashes, giggles and a whistle are heard three times a week at the Center Community Pool. Children are practicing their starts, their strokes and improving their times as members of the Barracuda Swim Team, a Center club sport.

Several political subdivisions were overpaid more than $31,000 in coal severance shortfall funds, and the state Treasurer’s office will suspended those distributions until the issue is corrected, Center-Stanton Public School officials said Nov. 14 at the monthly school board meeting.

Sometimes things don’t work out perfectly. The Center-Stanton Wildcats made it their season goal to advance from the District 10 tournament to the Region 5 tournament at the end of the season. The Wildcats finished the regular season fifth in the District 10 standings and had to play fourth seeded Washburn in the first round of the district tourney.

Oliver County residents will see two new commissioners on the county board in December. General Election is Nov. 6 and there are four names on the Oliver County ballot for County Commissioner. Replacing District 1 commissioner Dwaine Helmers will be either Keith Oestreich or Blake Wilkens. Replacing District 3 commissioner Kent Albers will be either Wm Bruce Van Oosting or Darrell Berger.
