Turtle Races numbers down
By ALLAN TINKER
There were 192 entries in the USA portion of the Turtle Race competition at the 2012 celebration in Turtle Lake on July 14. This was lower than the 200 plus competitors the preceding year. Six more were in the International race for World Champion against the top two USA turtles.
Representing Scotland were turtles Dumb, Dumber, Perky and Pinkie; Norway offered up Sven and Thor.
Tommy, the second place USA turtle “flew” across the finish line in a successful attempt to prevent Sven and the other outsiders from winning. He even bested his final elimination teammates Tommy and Starter.
Winning turtle owners were Bradley Nelson, Arizona, first in the USA; Cayden Kraft second in USA; and Kaden Letvin, Bismarck, coming in third.
Nelson and Kraft then raced
against Norwegian owners Son-drol and the unnamed Scottish group. Kraft emerged the winner.
It was a quick finish to a long day of elimination heats, in which the field of 192 was cut down, eight at a time, two winners in each heat, to the final eliminations. Do the math.
