The Velva City Commission held its rescheduled regular meeting on Monday night, April 27, and the Main Street project dominated the agenda. The commissioners had input from City Engineer Alan Estvold, Bond Counselors Scott Wegner and Jackie Wike, and Justin Thurm of Keller Paving, as well as local residents. Thurm was on hand to report that work on the project would begin Monday, May 4, with the installation of signage and stoplights. By Tuesday afternoon, Thurm hoped they would be turning dirt – or pavement – as the actual construction begins. “Central and First Avenues will be blocked completely off to begin with,” he said. “Main Street will be down to one lane for the two block stretch in the business district.” As work begins tearing up the east side of Main Street, timed stoplights will be placed on the south side of the underpass and at the intersection of Main and Second Avenue. As work commences, Central will be reopened “as quickly as possible” to facilitate the elevators, and then Second Avenue will be closed.
