FEMA funds available

According to Art Alejandre of FEMA (Federal Emergency Managment Agency), McHenry County residents are eligible to apply for federal assistance. McHenry County was included in both the declared statewide disaster and the Presidential declaration, making residents eligible for both state and federal funds. “There are seven categories,” Alejandre said. “Assistance is available to individuals, homeowners, businesses and renters.” This assistance is separate from the assistance being offered to the state and municipalities. Disaster victims in declared counties may apply for federal assistance programs by calling the toll-free registration line, 1-800-621-FEMA (3362), from 6 a.m. to midnight (CDT), seven days a week. Individuals with speech or hearing impairments may apply by calling (TTY) 1-800-462-7585. A disaster recovery center opened in Minot last week, and Alejandre urges local residents to register with FEMA. “Our main emphasis is to get everyone registered and let the experts judge the claims on a case by case basis,” he said. “All homeowners in a declared county should register and let us make the determination.”
