Main Street project underway

It’s been a busy week in Velva, with the Main Street project getting underway and numerous city meetings addressing the ensuing issues.
Last Tuesday, May 7, a public forum at City Hall found approximately 20 Main Street residents and business owners on hand to ask questions. There to answer were representatives from the DOT, Keller Paving, Pinky’s Aggregates and Ackerman-Estvold Engineering.
A major concern for two businesses was access: neither Northern Tier Federal Credit Union nor McHenry Insurance have rear access to their buildings.
Justin Thurn of Keller Paving said that after the sidewalks and street are torn out, they will be getting ready to trench.
Dale Honsey of Pinky’s, which will do the underground work, noted while the whole block will be disrupted for about a week with the underground work, “not every single business on that block will be affected that long.” He felt the most a business without a back door would be inaccessible was two or three days.
Thurn said the Keller crew will make sure access is provided through dirt ramps.
