The Velva Area Voice came home a winner after the North Dakota Newspaper Association awards were given out Friday, May 8, in Bismarck.
The Voice claimed 19 news, sports, photo, graphics and editorial awards: 10 firsts, five seconds, three thirds and an honorable mention. The paper won 14 advertising awards: four firsts, five seconds, four thirds and one honorable mention. The Voice also claimed the Sweepstakes Award in its circulation category.
BHG Inc., parent company of Velva Area Voice, owns 11 community weekly newspapers who were enterted in the contest. BHG newspapers brought home 25 firsts, 26 seconds, 19 thirds and nine honorable mentions in the advertising categories and 25 firsts, 31 seconds, 19 thirds and 18 honorable mention awards in the news, sports, editorial, photo and graphics categories. All total, staff of the 11 newspapers received 177 awards.
