Pushing ahead the paving
Rain and freezing temperatures have slowed progress on Velva’s Main Street project, but contractors at Tuesday morning’s meeting are pushing ahead nonetheless.
Dustin Keller of Keller Paving said they will be putting down asphalt at Central and Main on Tuesday. Jeff McElwain of Ackerman-Estvold Engineering warned Keller the paving couldn’t commence until temperatures rose and the ground thawed.
“We had frozen ground to two-and-a-half inches,” McElawain said. “You can’t pave over frozen ground.”
Keller agreed, but noted that everything thawed out fast on Monday, once the sun hit it.
“We’re hoping to pave that first lift from Central to First and get Central open in the next couple days,” he said. “We’re going to keep moving as long as the weather allows.”
