Santa Daze kicks off shopping season

Velva’s Santa Daze on Dec. 6 gave local shoppers the perfect opportunity to start filling their Christmas lists while supporting local enterprises and civic groups.
Even the youngest citizens got a taste of hometown shopping when youngsters “pretty much bought out” the offerings at the Elf Project, according to organizer Lori Brudevold.
“We couldn’t believe it, all we had left was one box of stuff,” she said. “We were done by 2 o’clock, and 90 percent of the items were bought by kids.”
The Elf Project offered new and nearly new items priced at $5 or less, giving children the chance to shop for friends and family. The sale was held at the Methodist Church, where helpful elves were on hand to help children select gifts and then wrap them up.
Other shoppers visited craft and bake sales at the City Hall and the Senior Center, and then made their way to local shops and eateries. The sunny day also made the sleigh rides a big success, and allowed a number of people to drive to the countryside and take in the Holiday Tour of Homes.
