Paving onward

Still behind, but working hard

Looking ahead to the scheduled completion date for the Main Street project, contractors admit they’re still behind schedule, but continue to push hard. According to Justin Thurn of Keller Paving, the traffic signals will move to the north side of the bridge on North Main around August 17. That means anyone entering town from the north will have to obey the traffic lights.

Sharp shooter takes aim

Xtreme sports shooter Patrick Flanigan put on a quite a show in Velva last week, despite high winds. His exhibition shooting was enjoyed by a couple hundred people, on hand for SunPrairie Grain’s customer appreciation dinner at the Velva rodeo grounds last Wednesday, July 15.

Don't walk on the oil!

With any luck, the signal lights will be moved and First Avenue reopened by this weekend, Monday at the latest. The move was announced at Tuesday’s public meeting with contractors. While the Main Street project is running about two weeks behind the original schedule, contractors say they’re gaining a couple days a week, and hope to be back on schedule soon.

Why shop Velva?

As local businesses continue to struggle with customer loss due to the Main Street construction project, they aren’t just sitting around complaining. At a meeting last Wednesday, July 15, business owners, operators and employees gathered at the Star City Golf Course clubhouse to brainstorm and share ideas for promoting sagging Main Street businesses.

Rain won't delay street work

At Tuesday morning’s meeting, contractors said that morning’s rain wouldn’t impede progress much. “It won’t delay us past today,” said Dustin Keller of Keller Paving. “It will just make everything muddier.”

We have a new sidewalk!

By the time you read this paper, Central Avenue in Velva should be open to traffic. At Tuesday morning’s meeting in Velva, representatives from Keller Paving said they would be paving the east lane of the south block on Velva’s Main Street that day, and planned to have Central Avenue open by Wednesday.
