Carnival on the hill

Souris Valley Care Center and Valley View Manor will host an anniversary Carnival Celebration on Thursday, May 21, 2009 from 4:30 to 7:30 on the facility grounds. This event is to honor 30 years of long term nursing care and 10 years of assisted living in and around the Velva area. Administrator Reier Thompson, staff, and residents cordially invite everyone to join in the festivities.

Main Street project underway

It’s been a busy week in Velva, with the Main Street project getting underway and numerous city meetings addressing the ensuing issues. Last Tuesday, May 7, a public forum at City Hall found approximately 20 Main Street residents and business owners on hand to ask questions. There to answer were representatives from the DOT, Keller Paving, Pinky’s Aggregates and Ackerman-Estvold Engineering.

The biggest jackpot ever

“I don’t know what I did to deserve this,” gushed Tracy Ulland as she clucked over her three-week-old twins, Emily and Eric. “It’s just so wonderful and overwhelming … we never thought we’d have this.” Tracy and her husband, John, rural Velva, are thrilled about the birth of their children, born April 11 in Minot with the help of a gestational surrogate mother.

FEMA funds available

According to Art Alejandre of FEMA (Federal Emergency Managment Agency), McHenry County residents are eligible to apply for federal assistance. McHenry County was included in both the declared statewide disaster and the Presidential declaration, making residents eligible for both state and federal funds.

And so it begins...

The Velva City Commission held its rescheduled regular meeting on Monday night, April 27, and the Main Street project dominated the agenda. The commissioners had input from City Engineer Alan Estvold, Bond Counselors Scott Wegner and Jackie Wike, and Justin Thurm of Keller Paving, as well as local residents.

Evening at the Arts wows audience

The second annual Evening with the Arts was held at the Velva Public School on Tuesday, April 7. Emcees for the evening were Anna Knutson and Josh Sandy. The event was created to showcase the arts programs and student talent that are thriving in Velva.
