Following the news that the Main Street project will probably not be completed until next spring, Velva City Commissioners spent most of last Monday’s meeting addressing issues connected to the project. The commission started the meeting by approving sale of the General Obligation bonds to provide funding for the project. They also passed a resolution to obtain loan funds from the State

The original deadline for Velva’s Main Street project was October 17. Now, that date is a wistful wish, gone with the wind, as wet weather and snafus pushed that date back two weeks.

Contractors are still playing catch-up on the Main Street project, and as work on the east side nears an end, a wrench was thrown in the works. Or rather, a rock.

At Tuesday morning’s meeting, contractors with the Velva Main Street project anticpated moving to the west lane sometime around Labor Day.

U.S. Sen. Kent Conrad was in Velva last Saturday, Aug. 15, to visit with local constituents and listen to their concerns. The hot topic was, as it is across the nation, healthcare reform. While some town hall meetings have erupted into chaos due to noisy protests, the group at Velva’s Valley View Manor was orderly and attentive.

The progress may seem slow, but contractors are moving along the Main Street project as quickly as possible, looking to make their October 17th deadline.

Looking ahead to the scheduled completion date for the Main Street project, contractors admit they’re still behind schedule, but continue to push hard. According to Justin Thurn of Keller Paving, the traffic signals will move to the north side of the bridge on North Main around August 17. That means anyone entering town from the north will have to obey the traffic lights.
