Yields up, protein down as harvest continues in decreasing autumn

The wet spring and summer is paying dividends for farmers as small grain yields around the area are excellent. But that same cool wet weather could be costing some money as protein levels are low.

This year, crops in the region are excellent, said Gaylen Lennick, manager of the Farmers Union Elevator in New Salem. Other than low protein levels, the quality of wheat and barley are excellent as well.
