ABATE holds toy drive at area grocery stores
ABATE is at it again, but this year they are expanding their toy fundraiser to local grocery stores.
The motorcycle group, which collected toys for children in McLean and Mercer counties, is setting up boxes at local grocery stores including Krause’s SuperValu in Hazen, Washburn and Garrison and Bronson’s SuperValu in Beulah.
“We decided that everybody has to buy groceries,” said Brenda Mattheis, North 9 and 10 District representatives for ABATE of North Dakota. “Somebody mentioned we should try it.”
The Pick City woman and her husband, Tim, lead the local group of 128 members. The motorcyclists hold an annual Toy Run to collect toys and money to benefit local children and food drives. Last year the group was able to present a pool table full of toys and a check for $100 to the Mercer County Women’s Action & Resource Center in Beulah and the McLean Family Resource Center in Washburn each.
But this year the group had a poor turnout due rain. So the group decided to try to raise money with the help of the local grocery stores.
