Fundraiser set for young mother battling cancer
Shaina Adelman thought she had kicked cancer. Diagnosed in 2011 with stage 2 breast cancer, the young mother of two underwent chemotherapy, a bilateral mastectomy, radiation and reconstructive surgery.
Her victory was short-lived. Last summer Adelman started experiencing a persistent pain in her ribs. A PET scan in July showed that the cancer had traveled to her spine. Further tests and a bone biopsy at Mayo Clinic confirmed the earlier diagnosis. She is on daily medications and receives monthly chemotherapy treatment, with the hope the tumor will shrink in size. If it does, radiation will be the next step.
