Center wins first game

9/18/13 (Wed)

In all reality the Center-Stanton Wildcats knew they would be fighting for the last playoff spot at the end of the year. Shiloh returned a lot of core players from their 2012 playoff team. Then there was also Grant County and Richardton-Taylor, schools that played competitive 11-man football in region 4A but dropped back to 9-man after re-classification, meaning they would be back as powers in the 9-man ranks.
The Wildcats knew that they’d have to battle similar teams like Mott-Regent, Bowman County, Hettinger-Scranton, Beach and Trenton-Trinity Christian for the final region 4 playoff spot. Well, the good news is that the Wildcats won their first battle for that final playoff spot, now they just need to do it four more times.
The Wildcats started out strong grabbing a first quarter lead on quarterback Logan Staigle’s 4-yard run. Mott-Regent answered back with a score on Brady Weigh’s 2-yard touchdown. But Center didn’t falter scoring again on a 13-yard run by Matt Gonzales, making the score 14-6.
In the second quarter the roles reversed. Mott-Regent scored two touchdowns – a 1-yard run by Weigh and a 5-yard pass by Weigh to Brett Messmer. Staigle scored the only touchdown of the quarter for Center, which helped the Wildcats keep a two-point halftime lead.
At the start of the second half Mott-Regent had momentum and a chance, only trailing by two points 22-20 at home. Mott-Regent got the only score of the third quarter on Tyler Zenter’s 15-yard catch from Weigh, giving Mott-Regent a 28-22 lead and things got a little tougher for Center. In all reality the Center-Stanton Wildcats knew they would be fighting for the last playoff spot at the end of the year.
