Bombs ignite LumberKings' playoff sweep

With six effective frames from Kolby Metzger – who helped himself with four strikeouts – and a four-run fourth inning, the Hazen Lumberkings knocked off Washburn for their third straight Babe Ruth I-94 Conference championship last Thursday.

Duewel, Borlaug toss 1-hitters in sweep

Going into the top of the seventh inning, Kerby Duewel had every pitcher’s dream: a possible no hitter. The Hazen American Legion pitcher had let a few walks past and even a couple scores. About to shutdown the Section 7 foe, only an out away, Duewel lost his ultimate goal.

Home run race heats up in Astros sweep

They may not win Major League Baseball’s Triple Crown Award but that doesn’t stop Tanner Borlaug and Alex Barfield from having their own home run derby. Following mirror blasts Tuesday night, Borlaug leads the series 4-3.

Berglund nominated for national coaching honor

In the state of North Dakota, one is hard pressed to find a more respected or successful high school golf coach than Darrell and Kathy Berglund. Their prestige is spreading past the state line as Darrell was recently named a finalist for the National High School Athletic Coaches Association golf coach of the year. Darrell is one of eight finalists with other golf coaches from Arizona, New Mexico, South Dakota, Connecticut, Illinois and Missouri. Each finalist will present a clinic during the convention and the winner will be announced June 23.

Extra-base hits keep Astros undefeated

Hazen coach Mike Lorenzano couldn’t have asked for a much better start to the American Legion season sweeping Hettinger June 3. That was what he thought until he got to the second week of action as his Astros continued their Section 7 dominance over Bowman with commanding 9-1 and 17-1 wins last Thursday on the road.

The number three has been on Hazen golfers’ minds all season. External pressure has pounded the idea of a never-before-achieved three-peat state title into all the Lady Bison’s heads. With all the building hype during last week’s Girls Class B State Golf Meet, the dramatic finale was appropriate.

Bison girls are state’s 2nd best

A Class B Girls State Track and Field team title has been on Allison Opp’s mind for the past three months. The Hazen senior could almost taste the trophy at last weekend’s state meet in Bismarck. However at the end, the Lady Bison were crowned second best as Benson County claimed the girls team title by nine points.
