North Stars drop home opener
By Jarann Johnson
The Hazen-Beulah North Stars started their season last week against Mandan. Mandan failed to advance out of the West Region tournament play like the the North Stars last season but had more success during the year going 6-10. The North Stars won a total of three games last year, so the game was viewed as an early season battle for two teams searching to improve.
The North Stars’ goalie, Colin Johnson, faced a turnover in front of his net but defended well and prevented a score. After the North Stars knocked the puck back into the neutral zone Connor Candrain, a senior, won a battle for it and skated into open ice for a shot on net. The senior beat Mandan’s goalie, Sawyer Schmidt, giving the North Stars a 1-0 lead with 14:11 left in the period.
The North Stars continued to play aggressively but none of their shots on net passed Sawyer for goals. The North Stars continued to hold up until a Mandan power play with 9:25 left in the period lead to a barrage of shots on Johnson. The sophomore keeper faced about three shots on one Mandan possession before the Braves tapped a rebound in, tying the game 1-1.
