Cardinals downed by No. 1 Mott-Regent

Even under normal conditions, it would be a monumental task to play against the number one team in the state on their home field. The Cardinals attempted to do so on Friday night by dressing only 12 players against Mott-Regent. Washburn’s depleted roster was hit hard by a dominant Wildfire team in the first half and the Cardinals wouldn’t be given the chance to get back into the game, leaving the field with a final score of 14-44. Mott-Regent held the upper hand from the beginning, scoring five touchdowns in the first half. The Wildfire’s Luke Honeyman was the man of the hour, running in three touchdowns and passing one. Mott-Regent would score yet another touchdown to start the second half scoring before the Cardinals found the end zone for the first time on a 22-yard pass from junior Jeff Rasmussen to senior Kier Vander Wal. Rasmussen would find another receiver for a touchdown in the fourth quarter, this time to freshman Brett Schreiner for a 25-yard pass. That would end the scoring for the night, the first half deficit too big of an obstacle for Washburn to overcome against the Wildfire defense.
