‘Camper’ residents local asset

This winter there is a new phenomenon in the Garrison area – RV parks that are filled with camping trailers. Not only are the mobile structures on site, many are occupied – not a typical situation during the winter months.
While that in itself isn’t typical, the 2011-12 winter weather has also been unusual. With most daily temperatures exceeding the average – often by double digits – the season began as one of the mildest on record. Only this past weekend, the state received its first real taste of winter in the form of significant snowfall. And more white stuff has been forecast.
It seems most local residents have embraced the reprieve from record snowfall that took place the past two years. Others may not fully appreciate the benefit of a mild winter. Included are those who are living in RVs and campers and are not accustomed to harsh winter weather. Among those are relative newcomers to Garrison, those who are staying at Stoney Hill RV Park, east of Garrison.
Jim and Blanche Nagel have owned and operated Stoney Hill RV Park since 2007. Due to an area-wide shortage of traditional housing, their seasonal business has been extended to a year-round venture.
During a recent visit to the park, Jim gave a tour of the accommodations that are available to park guests.  In addition to two shower rooms (roomy and clean), the park provides a community room for its guests. The space includes comfortable seating, satellite TV and Internet service. A table and chair set, another simple amenity, provides a place for park guests to visit, play cards or take part in other social activities.
