Although temperatures were brisk, the sun managed to peek out from between the clouds creating a recipe for a great day of nine-man playoff football action. The Central McLean Cougars hosted the Towner-Granville-Upham Titans in one of four quarter final football games around the state last Saturday.
Cougar senior back Grant Singer set up the first touchdown of the game after running for 56 yards of open field to the one-yard line. Senior quarterback Jordan Sundquist finished the drive with a one-yard run on a quarter back keeper. Singer ran for the PAT and the Cougars led 8-0 at the middle of the first quarter. The quarter would end 8-0.
The Titans of T-G-U would score on their next series of downs but were unable to complete the PAT and the Cougars held on to the lead, 8-6. With just 17 seconds left before halftime, the Titans completed a seven-yard touchdown run to lead 12-8 at the half.
The Cougars and Singer wasted no time at the beginning of the second half. Singer, with some help from his offensive line, scampered 64 yards on the first play from scrimmage for a Cougar touchdown. The lead switched hands and Central McLean led by two, 14-12.
The Titans were able to swallow up time on the clock with a long drive that led to a 20-yard touchdown with 5:36 left in the third quarter. Although the PAT was incomplete, the Titans took the lead from the Cougars 18-14.
With 8:38 left in the fourth quarter, sophomore quarterback Matt Landenberger zipped in the end zone for another touch down. The PAT run was unsuccessful yet the Cougars led again, 20-18.
The Cougars played tough defense in the remaining eight minutes of the game until the Titan’s quarterback was able to see daylight at the end of the field. The Titan quarter back ran 60 yards for a T-G-U touchdown. This time the PAT run was successful and the Titan’s led 26-20 with six minutes remaining in regulation.
The Cougars had one big series of downs near the end of the game. Singer had a 10-yard run. A T-G-U personal foul added 15 more yards to the play and the Cougars were in great field position to score. Senior receiver Ben Duben made a great catch in the ensuing after tipping a Sundquist pass for a 13-yard gain.
It was fourth and six and Sundquist hit another senior receiver Trevor Thomas for a 10-yard reception. The ball was sitting on the 17-yard line of Titans. With little time remaining, the Cougars attempted three pass plays. None of the plays was completed and on the third play, the Titans were able to rush Sundquist and the pass was intercepted. Time expired as the Titans were able to take a knee and the Titans won the ball game 26-20.
