Minot pair realizes ultimate dream
Sanders, Aberle win Governor’s Derby
Two avid Minot fishermen, an uncle and his nephew, realized the dream of a lifetime this past weekend and are this year’s North Dakota Governor’s Walleye Cup Derby champions.
After receiving their first place hardware at the Garrison City Park in front of a throng of onlookers the two said they still couldn’t believe they were Governor’s Cup derby champs.
“As an avid fisherman who fishes Lake Sakakawea it’s the ultimate dream to win the Governor’s Cup,” said Kevin Sanders. “Justin (Aberle) is 23 years old and to be 23 years old and win the Governor’s Cup is a lifelong dream.”
Aberle, still soaking it in, said the feeling is indescribable.”
“It hasn’t set in yet that’s for sure,” he added.
This is the third time the two have fished as a team – but they have never placed in the money. The two say they are regulars to Lake Sakakawea and the Garrison area.
Like most participants, Sanders said Aberle tried to get in some prefishing – to get a feel of where the best fishing might be but Mother Nature put a crimp in those plans.
