Trojans shut down Comets


The Turtle Lake-Mercer Trojans defeated the Underwood Comets three games to one in the second game of the opening round of the District 10 Volley ball tournament in Underwood Monday night. The Trojans will take on the Garrison Troopers in the second game Tuesday night.

The Comets took a slight lead in the first game but a kill by Devon Belisle and an ace from Morgan Zinke gave the Trojans a 4-3 lead. Another kill from Belisle and an ace from Taralee Anderson put the Trojans up 10-4.

A kill by Jordyn Sondrol gave the Trojans a 14-6 lead. The Comets then out-scored the Trojans 9-1 to tie the score at 15. A kill by Natalie Eslinger put the Comets up 20-17.

Serving errors and side outs plagued the Comets to let the Trojans tie the game at 22 and then go on to win the game, 25-22.

The Trojans came out of the starting blocks the second game and grabbed a 6-0. Then it was the Comets’ turn to score eight unanswered points and take an 8-6 lead with a kill by Jenna Bayless cutting the Comet lead to 8-7.

The Comets took control of the game from there and built a 22-15 lead with good all around play. An ace from Morgan Zinke, a kill by Belisle and a block from Bayless cut the Comet lead to 22-18.

The Comets got a couple of kills from Samantha Krueger and a side out for the last three points and the 25-18 win.

Game three, the Trojans lit up the score board first taking a 6-1 lead with Zinke getting an ace and Bayless a kill. The Comets then rattled off five straight points to tie the game at 6.

A side out put the Trojans up by one and an ace from Amy Lee made it 8-6 Trojans.

Jordyn Sondrol then went to work and scored on an ace a block and a kill to put the Trojans up 16-10. A kill from Bayless and an ace by Zinke made it 18-11 Trojans.

The Trojans finished the game off with kills from Sondrol, Belisle and Bayless plus an ace from Belisle for a 25-14 win.
