Trojans third in County

The Turtle Lake-Mercer Trojans took third place in the girls McLean County tournament held recently in Wilton.

The Trojans defeated the Wilton Miners in the first round 45-35. The Trojans took a 12-8 first-quarter lead but they were whistled for six fouls in the quarter with Jordyn Sondrol picking up her second one at the 5:28 mark and then sat out the rest of the quarter.

The Trojans put the Miners in the bonus with just three seconds gone in the second quarter and the double bonus at the 5:22 mark. With both Jenna Bayless and Sondrol on the bench with three fouls, the Miners made their move and tied the score at 16 with a Lisa Dewing put-back with 1:53 showing on the clock. Kelsey Everett scored a deuce with 48 seconds left to put the Trojans in front, 18-16. Sammie St. Claire and Sally Spitzer scored for the Miners the last 31 second to put the Miners up at the half 20-18. The Miners shot 12 free throws the first half making six. The Trojans never went to the line in the first half.

The Trojans were on the board first in the third quarter with Devon Belisle getting a deuce and Sondrol a triple. St. Claire stopped the Trojans’ mini-run for the Miners with a two-pointer at the 4: 28 mark to make the score 23-22 Trojans. Sondrol then scored a two-pointer and Everett scored a triple and a deuce to put the Trojans out in front, 30-22. St. Claire scored five quick points to cut the Trojan lead to 30-27. Caitlin Jensen scored for the Trojans with 12 seconds left in the quarter to put the score at 32-27 to end the quarter.

The Trojans went on an 11-2 run to start the fourth quarter to take a 43-29 lead. The Miners scored their second basket of the quarter at the 2:35 mark. Back to back buckets from Alanna Smith cut the Trojans lead to 43-33 and a Dewing bucket at the 1:28 mark again cut the lead to 43-35. Bayless finished the scoring for the game with a pair of free throws with 30 seconds left in the game for a 45-35 win for the Trojans.

The other first round games saw Underwood over White Shield 56-19, Our Redeemers defeat Garrison 45-26 and Washburn defeat Max 75-58.

The Washburn Cardinals defeated the Trojans 48-46 in the semi final game. The Trojans fell behind early as their shot didn’t go down and the Cardinals did a good job on their press to take a 13-4 first quarter lead and lead at the half 23-8. The Trojans made some minor changes after the half time break and came out and out the scored the Cardinals21-11 in the third quarter and trailed going to the forth quarter 34-29. The Trojans cut the Cardinals lead to 1 point 47-46 with just a few seconds left in the game but an end line violation gave the ball to the Cardinals. A Trojan foul put the Cardinals at the line for a free throw for the last point of the game.

The other semi final game Underwood defeated Our Redeemers 53-33. The Consolation bracket saw Garrison over White Shield 46-43 and Wilton defeated Max 48-42.
