Trojans win opener
The Turtle Lake-Mercer Trojans volleyball team opened the new season with a 3-0 win over the Wilton-Wing Miners on the Trojans’ home court Friday night.
Jordyn Sondrol led her team in kills with 13. Rachel Hanson was the leader in the assist department with 12. Taylor Fylling was the leader with six aces and Karley Wahl was the leader in digs with eight.
The first game saw the score tied at two when Taylor Fylling served up an ace and a couple of plays later served up another to put the Trojans up 6-2.
A kill from Miner Alanna Smith put the score at 6-4 Trojans. Kills from Jordyn Sondrol, Morgan Zinke and Rachel Hanson put the Trojans up 9-4. Back-to-back kills from Sondrol made it 15-8 Trojans.
An ace from Fylling and a pair of aces and a kill from Sondrol put the Trojans up 21-12.
The Miners made a run at the Trojans as the Trojans made some mistakes. Miners Lexi Hochhalter picked up a pair of aces in a 6-0 run. The Trojans gained the last two points on side outs for a 25-18 win.
Game two saw the Miners race to 7-1 lead before the Trojans got their game together. Sondrol stopped the Miners run with a kill to make the score 7-2 Miners. An ace from Zinke and pair of kills from Sondrol cut the Miners lead to 7-5.
The Trojans tied the game at eight, then Fylling broke the tie with an ace then added another just a couple of plays later. Kills from Devon Belisle and Sondrol gave the Trojans a 13-8 lead. From there, the Trojans cruised to a 25-15 win with Jenna Bayless and Sondrol getting a pair of kills and a pair of aces each down the stretch.
