Comets launch unbeatable attack

The Comets launched an offensive attack the Trojans couldn’t respond to last Thursday night, as the top-seeded Underwood team clinched the District 10 title on their home volleyball court, winning in three games.
After winning the opening two sets 25-20 and 25-18, and the Trojans came out fast in game three, taking a 12-7 lead, it didn’t feel like the Comets could coast on their two early wins. Not until senior setter Taylor Dammann started serving, that is. Dammann served up four aces to wipe out the Trojans’ lead, as the Comets took the lead 16-12 before losing the serve. As the teams battled dig-for-dig, attack-for-attack, there was still no relaxing for the Comets – until Dammann took over again to launch another attack, this time needing just two points, including the game-winning ace, to take the win with a 25-22 win.
Comet coach Mary Hefta says she never doubted the team would bring home the win, even when the Comets found themselves trailing in game three – especially when Dammann stepped up to serve. She knew Damman could deliver the killing blow.
"Just serve the rocket," said Hefta. "The other coaches are saying ‘over in and in, just over and in’. I was saying ‘just serve the rocket’."
