New credit union on its way

Since June, Velva residents have eyed the large hole at the corner of Second Ave. and Main Street, waiting to see what was going on. The wait is nearly over. According to Darrell Roos, President of Northern Tier Federal Credit Union, the lot will shortly be the new home of NTFCU’s Velva branch.

Dan Rather and Bob Schieffer will headline the Eric Sevareid Symposium scheduled for Bismarck at the end of September, and the city of Velva also plays a role in the celebration of its native son.

Farmers are getting after it

This year’s harvest is in full swing, and the season is proving to be a mixed bag for the county’s ag producers. Winter wheat, spring wheat and canola crops are all coming in good quality and weight, but getting the crops combined is presenting a challenge.

Velva school seeking construction bond

After meeting with the architects and much discussion, the Velva School Board has approved the initial resolution on General Obligation School Building Bonds of $4.4 million. A special election is scheduled for September 14 to give local voters the opportunity to vote on the bond issue.

In memory of a special man

For 25 years, Velva native son Robbie Wills served his country as part of the U.S. Navy, much of that time aboard nuclear ships and submarines on covert missions. But in the end, it wasn’t a dangerous military encounter that took his life, but a tragic case of the being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

If it's feast or famine, farmers are stuffed

The torrential rains and high winds that rolled through the area last week put an end to any late seeding plans in McHenry County. An estimated two to four inches of rain fell in just a couple hours on Thursday afternoon, causing washed out roads and flash flooding across the region. High winds uprooted trees, downed power lines and raised havoc with buildings as the storm tore across the state.

Commission refuses permit

The Velva city commission met in regular session on Monday night, and once again tackled the gaming site permit at the Lariat Club. Lariat owners Eric and Shannon Dove were once again on hand, as a representative of the Minot Hockey Boosters, who would like to make the local club one of their gaming sites. Representatives of the Velva American Legion were also in attendance, as the Legion currently has the gaming site at the Lariat.

An emotional return to #1

In a tournament filled with narrow one-run games and rain delays, the Velva-Drake Aggies not only ended Minot Ryan’s stranglehold on the state title, they did it in spectacular fashion. The Aggies took on the reigning state champs last Saturday night, and whipped the Lions 13-3 to claim the Class B High School championship for the first time in nearly a quarter of a century.

V.H.S. commencement

Velva High School graduated 39 seniors last Sunday, marking the school 99th commencement. Ali Podoll was valdictorian and Whitney Boehm, Michael Wiest and Zachary Neibuhr shared salutatorian honors.
