Vandals strike Velva and Drake

The Velva Sports Complex in the city park and the Drake cemetery were both vandalized over the Easter holiday. Spray paint and destruction was the order of the day as unknown perpetrators wrecked havoc in the two communities.

Taylor ranch is a finalist

The North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame announced on Feb. 27 that the Taylor Ranch of Towner was one of two finalists put forward in the hall’s ranch division for possible induction. Trustees will vote to induct one nominee on June 27 in Medora.

Annexation talks continue

At Monday’s regular meeting of the Velva City Commission, annexation talks between the city, Farmers Union Oil and Verendrye Electric continued. Following a special commission meeting last week, this week’s regular meeting brought F.U. Manager Cory Schmaltz and VEC General Manager Bruce Carlson to the table, along with Randy Hauck, VEC Member Services Manager and head of the Velva Community Development Corporation.

City discusses annexation issues

The Velva City Commission met in special session last Thursday to further discuss the annexation proposal and get a report on the Main Street project. The commission has approached annexing the property west of Velva that falls within the dike system. The commissioners feel that since the city is responsible for the certification and maintenance of the levees, any property receiving that flood protection should be part of the city proper. Annexing the property would make Verendrye Electric Cooperative a part of the city, and would also bring in the land recently purchased by Farmers Union Oil.
