Annexation talks continue

At Monday’s regular meeting of the Velva City Commission, annexation talks between the city, Farmers Union Oil and Verendrye Electric continued. Following a special commission meeting last week, this week’s regular meeting brought F.U. Manager Cory Schmaltz and VEC General Manager Bruce Carlson to the table, along with Randy Hauck, VEC Member Services Manager and head of the Velva Community Development Corporation.

City positions open up

Come this June’s city election, two positions at city hall will be open for contention. Mayor Cindy Shattuck and Commissioner Alden Hollenbeck have announced neither will seek re-election.

City discusses annexation issues

The Velva City Commission met in special session last Thursday to further discuss the annexation proposal and get a report on the Main Street project. The commission has approached annexing the property west of Velva that falls within the dike system. The commissioners feel that since the city is responsible for the certification and maintenance of the levees, any property receiving that flood protection should be part of the city proper. Annexing the property would make Verendrye Electric Cooperative a part of the city, and would also bring in the land recently purchased by Farmers Union Oil.

Commission meets with businesses

Velva city commissioners met with several local businessmen Tuesday morning, Feb. 2, concerning the annexation of their properties into city limits. Last fall, the city proposed annexing any property within the levee system that was not already part of the city proper. The move would pull in Verendrye Electric Cooperative and also lay claim to the site of the proposed new Farmers Union Oil complex on the north side of Highway 52.

Economics professor addresses annual meeting

The joint annual meeting of the Velva Community Development Corporation, Velva Rental Housing and Souris Valley Care Center was held Monday night at Valley View Manor in Velva. The meeting opened with a presentation on the “state of the state” from Dr. David Flynn, Associate Professor of Economics and director of the Bureau of Business and Economic Research at UND.

The McHenry County JDA will be hosting a free small business marketing seminar on January 27 at 6:00 pm at the Quilted Bean, Main Street, Velva. The presentation will be accompanied by a free soup and bread supper.

Pay it forward

After Souris Valley Care Center employee Roxanne Selzler won diamond earrings in a holiday contest sponsored by Lien’s Jewelry in Minot, the staff at the Velva care center were pretty happy. After all, they had nominated Selzler for the “Pay It Forward” contest, and were pleased to see their fellow employee receive such richly deserved recognition. But things got even better when the Minot jewelers contacted the care center and informed them they had also won the drawing for the Howard Miller grandfather clock.
