It’s every homeowner’s nightmare, and the stakes are even higher when you’re parents. That nightmare became reality for Rob and Danya (Krumwiede) Brown last week as a house fire destroyed their Velva home. But the most important things were saved: the couple and their two-year-old twin sons, Aiden and Caleb.

Dave Anderson and Kelly Patton (originally of Stanley and Velva) will perform in concert at 6 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 23, at Oak Valley Lutheran Church, Velva. A soup and sandwich supper will be available at 5 p.m. (Kelly is the daughter of former Velva High School music instructor, Gordon Patton.) Their music is a blend of contemporary, gospel and traditional Christian songs, often including children’s songs. During the concert, Dave shares his personal experiences and what has become known around the world as “The Rescue Story.”

The Velva City Commission tackled a couple of issues at its meeting Monday night, ranging from fire department needs to junk automobiles. Velva Fire Chief Mike Heisler was on hand to request financial assistance from the commission. The department has been awarded a grant for new turn-out gear, but must come up with matching funds of $8,500 to claim it. After some discussion, the commission approved $3,000 towards the effort.

The Velva City Commission met in a brief special session on Monday night, Oct. 25. The handful of issues at hand included parking problems for the Velva Housing Authority, the possibility of an ice skating rink on Main Street, the demolition permit for the school and the annexation reading.

Local noise ordinances weren’t the only city regulations addressed at last week’s city commission meeting. Police commissioner JD Larson has been investigating and rewriting the Velva’s parking ordinance, which had it’s first reading at last week’s meeting. Larson explained that the reasons for the revisions are the current and the coming population influx related to energy and construction development. One change is taking the street parking time from 72 hours down to 24 hours.
