The worst is over, hopefully

As the waters of the Souris River continued to rise last week, so did the concerns of Velva residents. In response, the city commission hosted a meeting at the school gym to update people on the measures the city was taking to protect the town, as well as answer questions and calm nerves.

Family escapes fire, home total loss

It’s every homeowner’s nightmare, and the stakes are even higher when you’re parents. That nightmare became reality for Rob and Danya (Krumwiede) Brown last week as a house fire destroyed their Velva home. But the most important things were saved: the couple and their two-year-old twin sons, Aiden and Caleb.

Levee discussions continue

Following a conference call that included Nancy Steinberger of FEMA, Velva city commissioners, city engineers and representatives from the Corps of Engineers, the city commissioners still had questions concerning levee certification.

Special music and survival story

Dave Anderson and Kelly Patton (originally of Stanley and Velva) will perform in concert at 6 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 23, at Oak Valley Lutheran Church, Velva. A soup and sandwich supper will be available at 5 p.m. (Kelly is the daughter of former Velva High School music instructor, Gordon Patton.) Their music is a blend of contemporary, gospel and traditional Christian songs, often including children’s songs. During the concert, Dave shares his personal experiences and what has become known around the world as “The Rescue Story.”

Velva City Commission meets

The Velva City Commission tackled a couple of issues at its meeting Monday night, ranging from fire department needs to junk automobiles. Velva Fire Chief Mike Heisler was on hand to request financial assistance from the commission. The department has been awarded a grant for new turn-out gear, but must come up with matching funds of $8,500 to claim it. After some discussion, the commission approved $3,000 towards the effort.

Pretty in Pink

Residents of the Souris Valley Care Center and Valley View Manor got into the Pink Spirit earlier this month in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. SVCC’s Stop Along the Road (STAR) committee organized Pink Week from October 11-15.
