Commission votes to close Hotel Berry Apartments
The decision was made at a hearing held last Tuesday, Oct. 15, at city hall. Velva City Attorney Jim Wilson joined the commissioners at the meeting, as City Building Inspector Ivan Canevello, who presented the case for closure and vacation of the building.
Prior to the presentation of arguments, Commission President Cindy Shattuck explained the hearing process, saying Canevello would present his argument and then a representative from the Berry could present their case.
Canevello, using notes he has taken since January of this year, noted noncompliance in several areas, including plumbing, electrical and fire suppression issues. He was accompanied on numerous inspections by a fire marshal and several state building inspectors.
