Tornado touches down near Velva
For the first time in quite a few years, the city’s sirens sounded about 4:15 p.m., and emergency weather warnings popped up on television and radio, urging people to seek cover.
The twister dropped down briefly, then quickly went back into the air, according to eyewitnesses.
Neil Schmidt was at his father’s farm (Don Schmidt) southwest of Velva and snapped a couple photos of the funnel. Schmidt said the tornado only touched the ground for maybe 15 seconds, but was visible for around ten minutes.
