When is a tax increase not???
Velva Public School patrons have read, with some alarm, the notice about a public hearing concerning raising the local mill levy by 22.54 percent. Similar ads have been published all across the state as school officials deal with the complications of explaining the new tax “increases.”
Scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 8, at 6:30 p.m. at the school, the meeting will allow local taxpayers to present “written and oral” comments about the levy.
But before folks sharpen their tongues and their pencils, they may want to investigate a bit more. It seems the tax “increase” percentage announced is somewhat misleading. Even though an increase is being announced, the overall amount of taxes property owners pay will actually be less than the previous year.
