Work continues, funding discussed
Work continues on Velva’s Main Street project, and at Tuesday morning’s meeting, contractors anticipated steady progress, barring inclimate weather.
Justin Thurn of Keller Paving said they are currently seeking permission from the Department of Transportation to briefly expand the work zone to three blocks.
“If we can change the distance, we can keep the underground work going,” he said. “It would keep things moving.”
If approved, the construction zone would encompass Main Street from First Ave. to 4th Ave., but only for a few days. The expansion would allow Keller to tear up pavement on the north block, allowing Pinky’s Aggregate to continue underground work while Keller paves the second business block. Pinky’s will be finished with the underground work between Second and Third by this Friday.
Currently, Keller is finishing the subgrade work between First and Second Avenues, as well as prepping for pavement. Knife River Concrete will pour the curb and gutter on Wednesday and the sidewalk Thursday. That means access to Northern Tier Federal Credit Union will be limited for a few hours on Thursday. The contractors plan to put boards to the entrance as soon as the cement sets up a bit, however, so the inaccessibility should be brief.
