Grapplers going great guns

The Aggie grapplers had a busy week, starting with a Friday night triangular in Velva where they hosted Beulah and Class A Williston. The Aggies thumped the Beulah 52-17 as the Miners gave up three pins and five forfeits.

Aggies are state champs...again!

“It felt the same way it always does … great.” So said Velva Head Football Coach Larry Sandy when asked about his team’s eighth state title in 10 years, making the Aggies 8-0 in their Class A Dakota Bowl appearances. The Aggies took down the Langdon-Munich Cardinals 20-0 in the title game last Friday afternoon, although the score doesn’t truly reflect the action.

Girls take third in region

While Velva volleyball coach Diana Thingstad called the Aggies semifinal loss to Our Redeemers “heartbreaking,” this determined crew didn’t let it keep them down. The girls came back to the court at the Region 6 tournament in Minot and took down the Bottineau Stars in three straight to claim third place. After repeated first round losses at the regional contest, it was an important accomplishment for the netters.

Aggies head for state championship game

The Velva Aggies are headed back to the state title game after a two year absence, and Coach Larry Sandy is feeling pretty good about that. “It’s awesome,” he said. “It feels like it’s where we belong. You work all year for it, and if you don’t go, it just doesn’t feel right.”

Aggies advance to semifinals

Following another tough battle with the Harvey Hornets, the Aggies have to face one more opponent to make their way back to the FargoDome and the State A title game. Last Saturday, Velva hosted Harvey in a hard hitting match-up that ended in an 18-12 win for the Aggies. “It was a typical, hard-hitting Velva-Harvey game,” said Velva Head Coach Larry Sandy. “We played well enough to win, and anytime you can win this time of the year, you take it.”

Girls take District 11 title

The Velva netters picked the perfect time to peak as they fought their way to the District 11 championship last week. The number two seeded Aggies took out first place Bottineau in three straight matches, 28-26, 25-23, 25-22, and shut down the Stars stranglehold on the district title. While Velva took it 3-0, it was a tight contest with both teams playing at the top of their games.

Aggies advance in playoffs

Although the Aggies got off to a slow start, they kicked it into overdrive and ran over the Heart River Cougars 39-0 in first round playoff action.

The Velva Aggies volleyball girls wrapped up their home games with a 3-1 win over Wells County last Thursday. At their last home game, the senior girls ended their years on the court by winning 18-25, 25-12, 25-22, and 25-16.

In a stunning performance for Velva’s newest group of athletes, the Aggie cross country girls took sixth at the state meet in Valley City last weekend, and placed two girls among the All State ranks.
