Cross country girls run down second

The Velva girls and boys cross country track teams were at the regional meet in Cooperstown last weekend, and did an exceptional job. The girls took second place and Kara Kuntz was named one of the Senior Athletes of the Year. The boys took eighth and were able to bring a full team to the meet. “We really happy with our times as everyone had their best time of the year,” said Coach Dave Peterson. “Hopefully, we can peak next week at state, where there will probably be over 200 runners in each division.” Four Velva girls made the top 20 last weekend, putting them on the All Region team. Kuntz, Tasha Heisler, Breanne Sherlock and Cassidy Peterson all claimed a spot on the team.

Aggies keeping pace

The Velva cross country runners continue to have a stellar season with the varsity girls finishing fourth as team in last weekend’s Rugby meet. Kara Kuntz took ninth place, Tasha Heisler ran down 14th, Breanne Sherlock 16th, Cassidy Peterson 37th and Katie Odland 58th, all in a field of 122. “This was a big meet and will be very similar to the state meet,” said Coach David Peterson. “We are working hard to try to finish in the top five at state. In Rugby, we finished just out of third by a few points, so it shows how close a lot of teams are.”

Still undefeated, foes still scoreless

Following last Friday night’s 44-0 rout of Lewis & Clark/Our Redeemer’s, the Aggies remain undefeated and their opponents have yet to score on Velva’s stingy defense. “We’re playing pretty decent ball,” said Velva Head Coach Larry Sandy. “I like the direction we’re going, from an offensive standpoint. We’re getting a lot of guys out there on the field.”

The Aggie netters started the new season with the Bottineau tournament last Saturday. “We started the day pretty rough,” admitted Velva volleyball coach Jamie Sitz. “I was working with the line-up, trying to see who plays well where and by who. Post 39 takes sectional championship

Velva’s Post 39 headed into last week’s Section 5 tournament as the number two seed, but came away with first place and a berth at this week’s state tournament in Grafton. It wasn’t an easy road, however, as the Velva nine had to play two championship games to claim the title. Post 39 lost a 2-1 squeaker to Rolette on Saturday, only to return to Kumm Field on Sunday and beat the Muskrats 14-8 in a come from behind blast. In all, Velva faced off with Rolette three times, the first on Thursday when they beat the Muskrats 8-2 and sent them into the loser’s bracket.
